Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games Bid Team Presented with Tartan Day Scotland International Ambassador Award

Tartan Day Scotland organisers have honoured the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games Bid Team's success by recognising the important role the games will play in raising Scotland's profile on the global stage.
This year marked the second International Ambassador Award, presented by John Swinney MSP at the Tartan Day Scotland Gala Dinner on Friday, 4th April to Councillor Stephen Purcell, Leader of Glasgow City Council who accepted the award on behalf of the successful Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games Bid Team.The first recipient of the award was internationally acclaimed actor Brian Cox, who hails from Dundee.
David Valentine, Advisor on Tourism to the Confederation of Scottish Local Authorities commented: "The Tartan Day Scotland International Ambassador award is made to those who are in the unique position to help raise Scotland's profile to a worldwide audience.This is not an annual award, but we felt strongly that the outstanding success of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games Bid Team deserved recognition on this level.
"By bringing the Commonwealth Games to Scotland in 2014, the Bid Team has ensured that Scotland will receive unprecedented media coverage, attracting visitors from all over the world, not just to the Games themselves but for many years to come.The opportunities for our tourism and export industries alone are boundless."
Councillor Stephen Purcell said: "I'm delighted to be accepting this award on behalf of the Bid Team, which took in partners from Glasgow City Council, the Scottish Government, and the Commonwealth Games Council for Scotland.During the bid phase the team travelled across the Commonwealth to promote our vision for the Games, and we hosted representatives from nearly 70 countries in Glasgow.
"The Commonwealth Games will be the biggest event that Scotland will ever host, and I'm sure that the athletes, officials, supporters and spectators coming to the Games will have an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime experience.The support of the people of Glasgow and Scotland in winning the right to host the 2014 Games was simply amazing, with almost 1.75million people signing up to Back the Bid.This award is an honour to accept because of that enthusiasm and excitement about sport, about our city and about our country."
